Apple on Tuesday unveiled the third-generation Apple Watch SE, the first update to its budget smartwatch in three years, adding a faster processor, new health tools and an always-on display.

The Watch SE 3, introduced alongside the Apple Watch Series 11 and Apple Watch Ultra 3, is positioned as the company’s entry-level model. It features the Apple S10 ARM processor, replacing the S8, which enables new gesture-based controls such as wrist flicks for dismissing notifications and double-tap shortcuts.

“There is one significant new feature — the OLED display, with a brightness of up to 1,000 nits, finally supports an always-on display, unlike its predecessor,” the company said. Apple added that the upgraded chip allows Siri to process voice input directly on the watch, speeding up response times.

The SE 3 also includes a skin temperature sensor for more precise menstrual cycle tracking and enhanced sleep monitoring with apnea detection. Still, it lacks advanced functions such as an electrocardiogram and blood pressure monitoring, features reserved for higher-end models.

Battery life remains at 18 hours, but Apple has added faster charging, offering eight hours of use after 15 minutes of charging and up to 80% capacity in 45 minutes. The device, made with 100% recycled aluminum and water-resistant to 50 meters, will be available Sept. 19 at $249.
