Grand Theft Auto 6, scheduled for release in May 2026, is generating widespread anticipation but also sparking debate over how the game will differ from earlier titles in the franchise.

Dan Houser, a co-founder of Rockstar Games who was central to the writing of Grand Theft Auto IV and Red Dead Redemption 2, left the company five years ago and is not involved in the project. His absence has prompted discussion among fans, many of whom worry the upcoming game may not deliver the same depth of storytelling that defined past installments.

Rockstar Games co-founder Dan Houser confirms GTA 6 is the first title in the series he didn’t write.

“I wrote the last 10 of them, so I think the world had enough GTA from me… so It’s not gonna be a story I wrote or a character set I developed, it’s gonna be great, I’m sure.” pic.twitter.com/qRrtnrp2cd

While Houser has publicly indicated he remains optimistic about the studio’s ability to meet expectations, some players continue to voice concern on social media. Previous Rockstar titles set a high bar for narrative-driven gameplay, with emotional storylines that resonated strongly with audiences.

Rockstar has confirmed May 26, 2026, as the release date, but analysts and industry observers note that large-scale game launches are often delayed, raising the possibility that the release could be pushed into late next year.
