Apple Headset Filing Suggests Conservative Hardware Update

FCC documents confirm Wi-Fi 6, technical drawing mirrors current Vision Pro

Apple’s upcoming virtual reality (VR) headset has surfaced in U.S. regulatory filings, pointing to a possible launch later this year.

The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) published documentation relating to an unreleased head-mounted device carrying the model number A3416. According to the filing, the device supports Wi-Fi 6 connectivity, consistent with Apple’s current Vision Pro model, rather than moving to Wi-Fi 6E or Wi-Fi 7.

A technical drawing included in the FCC report shows a headset design nearly identical to the existing Vision Pro. This suggests the next-generation device may emphasize internal upgrades over external changes, with industry speculation centering on the inclusion of Apple’s latest M5 chipset.

“Embedded below, the image shows a headset with the same overall design and hardware as the existing Vision Pro,” the filing noted.

Apple introduced the Vision Pro earlier this year at a starting price of $3,499. Market observers expect the successor, rumored as the Vision Pro 2, to launch before the end of 2025.

The move comes as the broader VR market awaits new entries from rivals. Valve’s long-rumored Deckard headset has yet to appear despite recent speculation of a September unveiling. Meta, meanwhile, last refreshed its lineup with the Quest 3S, while Vivo announced the Vivo Vision in China but has not begun sales.

Whether Apple markets the new headset under the Vision Pro name or as a second-generation model remains unclear.
