Tesla has introduced vehicle-to-load (V2L) capability to its Model Y for the first time, allowing the electric SUV to act as a mobile power source for appliances, camping equipment, and work tools. The feature is initially restricted to the 2026 Model Y Performance, the shortest-range version of the company’s most popular vehicle.

The system, which converts the car’s battery into a large power bank, is activated using Tesla’s Powershare Outlet Adapter, previously limited to the Cybertruck. The $80 accessory enables the Model Y Performance to provide electricity to household devices during outages or outdoor activities.

The update places Tesla alongside other electric vehicle makers that have been expanding V2L and vehicle-to-home (V2H) functions across their lineups. For the rest of the Model Y range, only third-party solutions are currently available, with no confirmation on whether the function will be extended to additional trims.

Tesla customer service representatives have indicated that the Model Y Performance is equipped with V2H capability, allowing it to potentially power an entire home. However, the company has so far only confirmed official support for V2L use.

The move highlights Tesla’s gradual expansion of bidirectional charging technologies, which are becoming an increasingly competitive feature in the EV market.
