Starbreeze has cancelled development of its planned Dungeons & Dragons video game, originally scheduled for release in 2026, as part of a wider strategy to concentrate on its Payday franchise.
The project, known internally as Project Baxter, was announced in 2023 and had been expected to feature cooperative play and community-driven content. Despite initial progress, the studio decided to halt the title following a strategic review.
Starbreeze said its decision reflects a commitment to strengthening Payday, which remains one of its most successful gaming properties. By redirecting resources, the company aims to accelerate development timelines and expand player engagement within its core franchise.
The move will result in the layoff of 44 employees. Starbreeze stated that it is working to provide support for affected staff as they transition to new opportunities.
The cancellation is likely to disappoint fans who had been anticipating the new Dungeons & Dragons release. Industry analysts noted that the project could still be revived by another developer, although no such plans have been confirmed.
