AMD has signed a long-term agreement with OpenAI to supply 6 gigawatts of compute capacity for the company’s next generation of artificial intelligence systems, deepening ties between the two firms amid intensifying competition in the AI hardware market.
The partnership includes multiple generations of AMD’s Instinct GPUs, beginning with the MI450 series, scheduled for deployment in the second half of 2026. The agreement builds on previous collaborations using AMD’s MI300X and MI350X processors and aims to strengthen OpenAI’s data center infrastructure for large-scale AI workloads.
As part of the deal, OpenAI will receive a warrant allowing it to acquire up to 160 million AMD shares. The warrant vests in stages tied to hardware deployment milestones and share price performance, aligning incentives between the two companies as AI infrastructure expansion progresses.
AMD expects the partnership to deliver substantial revenue growth, potentially reaching tens of billions of dollars over time, while enabling OpenAI to scale its operations efficiently. Executives from both firms characterized the arrangement as mutually beneficial, combining AMD’s high-performance computing expertise with OpenAI’s AI research capabilities.
The collaboration underscores the accelerating demand for computing power across the AI sector. By aligning technical roadmaps and sharing development insights, AMD and OpenAI aim to establish a foundation for sustained innovation and global AI infrastructure growth in the years ahead.
