Meta’s Instagram has rolled out its Map feature in India, expanding a tool designed to help users share and discover location-based content from friends and creators. The launch comes with new privacy and transparency updates aimed at clarifying how location data is shared on the platform.
The Instagram Map allows users to opt in to sharing their last active location with selected friends and to explore posts from different areas. Meta said the feature now includes a clearer, persistent indicator at the top of the map to show whether location sharing is active or disabled. An additional icon appears under a user’s profile photo in the Notes tray when location sharing is turned off.
According to Instagram, the improvements address early user feedback that some people found confusing. Many users mistakenly believed that tagging a location in a post automatically shared their real-time position. To reduce this misunderstanding, the app has removed profile photos that previously appeared on top of location-tagged content and introduced reminders explaining when tagged content populates the map.
The update also includes a preview feature, allowing users to see how their tagged photos, reels, or stories will appear on the Map before publishing. Instagram said these changes were designed to strengthen user control and provide clearer education about location visibility.
Meta stated that Instagram Map aims to offer a “lightweight way to connect with friends” through shared places and experiences, while continuing to prioritize safety and user choice. The company added that location sharing remains entirely optional and can be turned off at any time.
