Samsung Electronics and KT Corporation said they have successfully validated artificial intelligence-based radio access network optimization on KT’s live commercial network, marking what they described as the first demonstration of the technology outside simulations.

The companies said the AI-RAN optimization was tested on a commercial network in Seongnam, Gyeonggi Province, following simulation-based verification completed in June. The field trial involved about 18,000 users across areas with varying environmental conditions and confirmed that stable, uninterrupted service could be delivered in real-world settings.

Unlike traditional approaches that apply the same network configuration to all devices connected to a base station, the AI-based system dynamically adjusts settings for individual users based on real-time wireless conditions. Samsung and KT said the technology uses AI to learn from users’ movement paths and usage patterns, allowing it to predict and proactively prevent recurring connection problems.

According to the companies, users who had previously experienced frequent service disruptions saw a significant reduction in disconnections after the AI-driven configurations were applied, while other users in the same areas also reported fewer connectivity issues. The results were measured by comparing connection failures before and after deployment on the commercial network.

“This is a major milestone that shows how AI can improve user experience on real-world commercial networks,” said JinGuk Jeong, executive vice president and head of the Advanced Communications Research Center at Samsung Research. KT executive vice president Jong-Sik Lee said the test showed that “AI can transform network operations around users,” adding that the partners plan to expand validation across additional commercial networks as they advance technologies for the future 6G era.
