Samsung Electronics said its SmartThings smart home platform will now support Matter 1.5, becoming the first platform to enable compatibility with Matter-certified cameras as the global standard for connected devices continues to expand.
The update, which is set to roll out later this month, extends SmartThings’ existing Matter support beyond devices such as lights, door locks, switches and sensors to include cameras. Samsung said the move will give SmartThings the broadest support for Matter devices among major smart home platforms.

Matter 1.5, announced by the Connectivity Standards Alliance in November, introduces standardized support for cameras alongside new capabilities for closure devices such as blinds, awnings and garage doors, as well as enhancements related to energy management. Camera features supported under the standard include live video streaming, motion detection, two-way communication and remote controls such as pan, tilt and zoom.
Samsung said the update is intended to simplify development for device makers, allowing manufacturers to integrate Matter-based cameras into SmartThings without building custom software interfaces. The company has worked with partners including Aqara, Eve and Ulticam on Matter-compatible camera products, which are expected to begin rolling out in 2026.

The company said the expansion reinforces its open-platform strategy for SmartThings, which already supports thousands of device models from hundreds of partner brands worldwide, as competition intensifies among technology companies seeking to define standards for the connected home.
