Samsung Electronics said the carbon reduction impact of its AI Energy Mode for selected washing machines has been verified by Carbon Trust Assurance, marking the first time a product feature has been assessed under the Decarbonizing the Use-Phase of Connected Devices (DUCD) specification.

The verification evaluates greenhouse gas reductions achieved during actual consumer use, rather than during manufacturing. Samsung said the assessment compared emissions generated when AI Energy Mode was enabled with those produced when the feature was not used, highlighting the role of connected technologies in lowering energy consumption during daily operation.

According to the company, Carbon Trust Assurance conducted a pilot assessment covering Samsung’s global washing machine lineup between July 2024 and June 2025. During that period, selected energy-efficient models consumed 12.28 gigawatt hours of electricity through the SmartThings platform, resulting in 5,266 metric tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent emissions. The use of AI Energy Mode accounted for verified savings of 5.02 gigawatt hours of energy and 2,084 metric tonnes of emissions.

Samsung joined the DUCD initiative in 2022 as a secretariat member. The initiative, led by the Carbon Trust, published a global specification in November 2024 that establishes standardized methods for measuring energy use and carbon savings from connected devices during the use phase.

The company said it plans to continue developing energy-saving appliance features and will present related technologies and new products at the CES 2026 technology exhibition.
