Nintendo may be considering a closer link between its Alarmo interactive alarm clock and gameplay on its consoles, according to an updated patent filing in Japan. The patent was originally filed in 2021 and later published in the United States in 2023, with recent activity suggesting the idea remains under active review.
The Alarmo is currently positioned as a novelty accessory that wakes users with themed sounds from Nintendo franchises. As the article notes, “once gamers are awake, it has limited functionality with Switch or Switch 2 games,” with notifications largely restricted to system updates or new content alerts.

The patent describes technology that would allow an alarm clock to receive real-time notifications from external devices, potentially including the Switch and a future Switch 2. Unlike traditional alarm clocks that rely on programmed routines stored on the device, the proposed system would respond dynamically to events generated by connected hardware.
In practice, this could mean in-game achievements or seasonal events triggering sounds on the Alarmo, such as a chime after a race win or themed audio linked to in-game calendars. Without Bluetooth, the clock would likely depend on its Wi-Fi connection to communicate with consoles.
Nintendo has not confirmed any plans to bring the patented features to market, and such filings do not always lead to products. However, the article suggests the concept could broaden the Alarmo’s appeal, concluding that “fans would have reason to move the Alarmo from bedrooms to living rooms.”
