A fan-made modification is adding new gameplay elements to Red Dead Redemption 2, extending the presence of army units across the game’s open world as the title continues to attract players years after its original release.

The mod, called Army Overhaul, changes how soldiers behave in the game, allowing them to appear in a wider range of locations instead of remaining largely confined to forts. Players can now encounter military units transporting supplies by wagon and moving through regions previously untouched by the army.

The project was created by modder tom2877777, addressing criticism that the military felt underused in the base game. As described in the original article, “in the base game, soldiers stay in their forts and rarely venture outside,” a limitation the mod seeks to correct.

Under the new system, soldiers may appear in towns such as Valentine and near the Wapiti Native camps, while their presence in Saint Denis remains rare. The mod also introduces sheriff patrols in quieter areas and increased Native patrol activity near their settlements, adding more dynamic encounters during exploration.

Army Overhaul also raises the stakes for criminal behavior, as players with high wanted levels can be pursued by large groups of soldiers attempting to arrest them. The mod is available for free on Nexus Mods and is based on the existing LAW mod, with only a small number of files modified, according to its creator.
