OpenAI has launched a new international education initiative aimed at helping governments and universities integrate artificial intelligence into national education systems, as countries prepare students for a labor market increasingly shaped by AI-driven change.
The program, called Education for Countries, is part of OpenAI’s broader collaboration framework with governments and is designed to narrow the gap between rapidly advancing AI capabilities and their limited adoption in everyday education. The company says education systems play a central role in ensuring new technologies translate into widespread economic and social benefits.

Under the initiative, OpenAI will work with ministries of education, universities and research institutions to deploy AI-powered learning tools, support large-scale research on learning outcomes and teacher productivity, and provide training and certification programs aligned with national workforce priorities. The effort also includes building a global network of policymakers and educators to share best practices for responsible AI use.
The first group of participating countries includes Estonia, Greece, Italy through its national university rectors’ conference, Jordan, Kazakhstan, Slovakia, Trinidad and Tobago, and the United Arab Emirates. In Estonia, AI tools have already been deployed nationwide across public universities and secondary schools, reaching tens of thousands of students and educators, alongside long-term research projects examining the effects of AI on learning.

OpenAI said AI deployments are expected to follow phased rollouts, beginning with teacher training and limited student pilots, particularly in secondary education, to ensure safety and alignment with local curricula. Additional countries are expected to join the program later in 2026 as OpenAI expands its education-focused partnerships worldwide.
