Garmin has unveiled the Garmin Catalyst 2, a compact device that combines an onboard camera with a built-in display, aimed at helping drivers analyze performance and capture lap footage simultaneously. The system is designed primarily for track use and is scheduled to launch on Feb. 20 at a price of $1,199.

The Catalyst 2 features a 3-inch display with a resolution of 640 x 360 pixels, allowing drivers to monitor lap times and compare results against previous personal records. Garmin emphasizes that while the device can technically be used on public roads, it is intended for racing environments and should not encourage users to exceed speed limits or violate traffic laws.

Beyond lap timing, the system delivers real-time audio prompts through a headset or vehicle speakers. These cues are designed to provide guidance on acceleration and braking during a session. After each run, the device highlights three segments with the greatest potential for improvement, reducing the need for extensive post-session analysis.

To generate performance data, the Catalyst 2 relies primarily on 25Hz GPS to calculate speed and deceleration, supplemented by an integrated accelerometer. The built-in camera records video at 1440p resolution, and footage can be stored using an optional Garmin Vault subscription and reviewed through a companion mobile app.

Garmin said the platform also includes social comparison tools, enabling users to benchmark lap times against other drivers on the same track, filtered by season, date, year, or vehicle type. As the company noted, the device is intended to help drivers “set new personal bests and to capture the fastest lap on video at the same time,” positioning it as both a coaching and recording solution for motorsport enthusiasts.
