Google has been identified as the developer behind a planned 2.7 GW data center campus near Cheyenne, Wyoming, replacing Crusoe as the company leading the project.
According to local reports, the development has been renamed Project Tembo and will be built on a 716-acre site in the Switchgrass Industrial Park, approximately eight miles south of Cheyenne.
Google Advances Project Tembo
The campus will be developed by Google’s subsidiary, Jupiter Star Holdings LLC, and is planned to include four data halls, an office building, logistics facilities and network infrastructure. Construction is expected to be completed by 2031.
The project was previously known as Project Jade and was being developed by Crusoe as a 1.8 GW campus with the potential to expand to 10 GW. Crusoe paused work on the project in June, stating it had done so at the request of its customer.
Google has not disclosed the reason for assuming responsibility for the development.
The campus will be powered through a combination of bring-your-own-power (BYOP) infrastructure and electricity supplied by regional utility Black Hills Energy. Tallgrass Energy is continuing work on the dedicated energy infrastructure supporting the site.
Cheyenne has become a major destination for hyperscale data center investment, with Microsoft, Meta and CoreWeave also developing large-scale digital infrastructure projects in the region.
