Wikipedia marked its 25th anniversary on Jan. 15 as the Wikimedia Foundation highlighted the expansion of Wikimedia Enterprise, its commercial platform for large-scale reuse of Wikipedia and other Wikimedia project data.

The Foundation said companies including Amazon, Meta, Microsoft, Mistral AI and Perplexity have formally joined its list of Enterprise partners for the first time, adding to an existing group that includes Google and other technology and data-focused firms. These organizations use Wikimedia content to support applications such as search, artificial intelligence tools and digital assistants.

Wikimedia Enterprise was created to provide reliable, high-throughput access to human-curated knowledge while helping to sustain Wikipedia’s nonprofit model. The Foundation said the partnerships are intended to ensure that volunteer-created content can be distributed at scale with accuracy, transparency and responsible governance.

Wikipedia remains one of the world’s most visited websites and the only nonprofit among the global top ten. The platform hosts more than 65 million articles in over 300 languages and records nearly 15 billion page views each month, making it a widely used source of data for training large language models and powering AI-driven services.

The Enterprise platform offers several access methods, including real-time update streams, hourly downloadable snapshots of the encyclopedia and on-demand article retrieval. Wikimedia said the value of these services is increasing as AI systems and specialized knowledge tools depend more heavily on high-quality, human-maintained datasets.
