Amazon is set to shut down its stand-alone Freevee app in August 2025, consolidating its free, ad-supported streaming content under the Prime Video umbrella. Users of the Freevee app have begun receiving in-app notifications directing them to continue accessing Freevee programming through Prime Video.
The company first announced its intention to phase out the Freevee brand in November 2024, as part of a broader strategy to streamline its streaming services. While the Freevee app will be retired, its programming—including original series and live TV—will remain accessible to both Prime and non-Prime members via the “Watch for Free” section on Prime Video.
Freevee, originally launched in 2019 as IMDb TV, was rebranded in 2022 and is currently available in the United States, United Kingdom, Germany, and Austria. Its lineup includes a mix of original content such as the Emmy-nominated series Jury Duty, Bosch: Legacy, and the rebooted soap Neighbours, along with a wide selection of licensed movies, TV shows, and free ad-supported streaming television (FAST) channels.
Amazon emphasized that the move will not affect the availability of Freevee content, but rather serves to centralize its offerings on a single platform. The change reflects a growing industry trend where media companies are consolidating platforms to reduce fragmentation and improve user experience.
