Apple’s newly announced AirPods Pro 3 will offer live translation features, but only when paired with iPhones that support Apple Intelligence, the company’s artificial intelligence system.

The feature was introduced during Apple’s “Awe Dropping” event on September 9, where the company also unveiled the iPhone 17 series, new Apple Watch models and updated AirPods. “Live translations require iPhone models that support Apple Intelligence. This means only those who are using the fairly newer phones will be able to make use of this advanced feature,” Apple said.

Currently, only the iPhone 15 Pro and newer models are compatible with Apple Intelligence. Support also extends to iPads with M1 or later chips, Macs with M1 or later processors, the iPad mini (A17 Pro), and Apple Vision Pro.

Although AirPods Pro 3 are the first earbuds to integrate real-time translations directly in-ear, the feature will also be enabled on AirPods Pro 2 and AirPods 4 through a firmware update. However, it remains unclear whether older models will deliver the same ear-to-ear translation experience.

At launch, translations will be available in English, French, German, Portuguese and Spanish, with Italian, Japanese, Korean and Chinese expected later this year. AirPods Pro 3 are priced at $249, with sales beginning September 19.
