Amazon Web Services (AWS) has launched a new organization dedicated to helping enterprise customers deploy artificial intelligence solutions by embedding AWS engineers directly within client organizations.

The new AI-focused forward-deployed engineering (FDE) team will work alongside customers to build purpose-designed AI agents while helping companies develop the skills needed to manage and expand their AI capabilities independently.

    Embedded AI Engineering Support

According to AWS, engineers assigned to the new organization will engage directly with customers during AI deployments, focusing on rapid implementation and long-term customer self-sufficiency.

Rather than simply building and maintaining AI systems, the team is intended to transfer technical expertise to customer organizations throughout each engagement.

Francesca Vasquez, Vice President of Frontier AI at AWS, said the initiative is designed to leave customers with both AI solutions and lasting engineering capabilities.

“Customers leave AWS FDE deployments with both new solutions and new engineering capabilities.”

    She added:

“Along with agentic systems running in their own AWS environment, they gain lasting AI skills, workflows, and patterns they can use to innovate independently.”

    Amazon Commits $1 Billion

AWS said it will commit US$1 billion in internal resources to support the new organization. The funding represents Amazon’s internal investment rather than a separate joint venture or external financing arrangement.

The forward-deployed engineering model was popularized by Palantir and has gained traction as organizations seek hands-on assistance implementing complex AI systems.

Under the model, engineers temporarily work inside customer organizations, allowing them to tailor AI deployments to specific operational needs while providing ongoing technical support during implementation.

    Growing Industry Trend

AWS joins a growing list of AI companies adopting the forward-deployed engineering approach.

In recent months, both OpenAI and Anthropic have announced their own forward-deployed engineering initiatives through partnerships with private equity firms, combining technical expertise with capital and access to enterprise customers.

The increasing adoption of the model reflects growing demand from businesses seeking practical assistance in integrating AI technologies into existing operations while building internal capabilities for future development.
