Vince Zampella, a leading figure in the video game industry and director of the Battlefield franchise, died in a traffic accident in California on Dec. 22, 2025, Electronic Arts and the Battlefield development team said. He was 55.
Zampella was widely regarded as one of the most influential developers in modern gaming. He co-founded Infinity Ward, where he helped create the Call of Duty franchise, before establishing Respawn Entertainment, the studio behind Titanfall, Apex Legends and the Star Wars Jedi series. In 2021, he took on responsibility for guiding the long-term creative direction of Battlefield.
The circumstances surrounding the crash have not been fully detailed, and authorities have not released further information. Zampella is survived by three children, according to statements from the companies.
In a tribute posted on social media, the Battlefield development team described Zampella as “a visionary who believed in bold ideas, trusted his teams, and always put players first,” adding that his leadership and character left a lasting mark on the franchise.
Electronic Arts said it was deeply saddened by the loss, calling Zampella’s death an “unimaginable loss” to the company and the wider gaming community. The publisher said his impact extended beyond the games he created, citing his role as a mentor, colleague and leader across the industry.
