Bosch has secured a funding agreement worth up to $225 million from the U.S. Department of Commerce under the CHIPS and Science Act to support the expansion of its semiconductor manufacturing facility in Roseville, California.
The funding will contribute to Bosch’s planned investment of up to $2 billion at the site, where the company is establishing production capacity for silicon carbide (SiC) semiconductors used primarily in electric vehicles.
Roseville Facility to Expand SiC Chip Production
Bosch acquired the Roseville facility from TSI Semiconductors in 2023 and has since been converting it into a silicon carbide semiconductor manufacturing plant. Pilot production is underway, with commercial manufacturing scheduled to begin later this year.
The facility will manufacture and test SiC chips on 200 mm wafers, enabling higher production volumes and improved manufacturing efficiency.
Bosch said the investment supports its strategy to expand global silicon carbide production as demand for power semiconductors continues to grow across the automotive sector.
The company recently introduced its third-generation SiC chips, which it says deliver up to 20% higher power density in a smaller package. Bosch has supplied more than 60 million silicon carbide chips since launching the first generation in 2021.
Funding Supports U.S. Manufacturing Expansion
In addition to the federal funding, Bosch will receive $25 million in grants from the State of California for the Roseville project.
The company plans to invest approximately $7.5 billion across its U.S. operations by 2031 as it expands domestic semiconductor manufacturing.
The investment comes amid increasing demand for silicon carbide semiconductors driven by the adoption of 800-volt electric vehicle platforms, faster charging systems and higher-performance electric drivetrains. Governments in both the United States and Europe continue to support semiconductor manufacturing projects aimed at strengthening supply chain resilience and domestic production capabilities.
