OpenAI has introduced a new generation of in-chat applications for ChatGPT, allowing users to interact with third-party services directly within conversations. The company also launched its Apps SDK in preview, enabling developers to build and test their own ChatGPT-integrated tools.
“Apps in ChatGPT fit naturally into conversation,” the company said in its announcement, describing them as interactive experiences that adapt to user context. Developers can begin creating apps today using the new SDK, built on the open Model Context Protocol (MCP), while users outside the European Union can access the feature immediately across all ChatGPT plans.
The first wave of integrated partners includes Booking.com, Canva, Coursera, Figma, Expedia, Spotify, and Zillow, with more expected later this year. These apps appear automatically when relevant to a user’s chat or can be summoned directly by name.
OpenAI said the feature aims to help its 800 million ChatGPT users “create, learn, and do more” without leaving the chat interface. The apps combine familiar interactive elements such as maps and playlists with conversational inputs, allowing users to perform tasks like making travel plans, generating designs, or finding homes directly in ChatGPT.
The company plans to begin accepting app submissions later this year, with details on monetization to follow. The move marks OpenAI’s latest effort to expand ChatGPT into a broader ecosystem, transforming it from a conversational AI into a platform for real-time applications and services.
