ESA Backs MAGPIE Lunar Rover With €65 Million Development Contract

The agreement positions ispace-Europe to complete the rover and prepare the mission for a planned 2029 landing near the Moon's south pole.

The European Space Agency (ESA) has awarded a €65 million contract to ispace-Europe to advance the development of the Mission for Advanced Geophysics and Polar Ice Exploration (MAGPIE) lunar rover, supporting a planned mission to the Moon’s south pole in 2029.

The agreement covers completion of the rover and its scientific payloads, manufacturing and testing, transportation to the lunar surface, mission operations, and delivery of scientific data to ESA.

    Advancing Europe’s Lunar Exploration Plans

MAGPIE is being developed under ESA’s Small Missions for Exploration initiative to investigate the Moon’s south polar region, where scientists believe significant deposits of water ice and other volatile materials may exist.

The rover is designed to characterize these resources, which could play a key role in supporting future long-duration human missions to the Moon.

The contract marks the beginning of Phase 2 of the programme after ispace-Europe completed the mission’s Design Prototype Review. Although the award was announced on 24 July, the company said Phase 2 activities officially commenced on 1 July.

The next major development milestone will be the Structural Thermal Model Manufacturing Readiness Review.

    Commercial Approach to Space Missions

Julien-Alexandre Lamamy, Chief Executive Officer of ispace-Europe, said the contract reflects ESA’s growing reliance on commercial partnerships for lunar exploration.

“MAGPIE represents a major step forward for European lunar exploration.”

    He added:

“This contract award demonstrates ESA’s commitment to a new model for small, agile exploration missions – one that combines commercial delivery, scientific ambition and international collaboration.”

    Mission Cost Surpasses Initial Target

ESA previously stated that projects under its Small Missions for Exploration programme would target an overall mission cost of approximately €50 million.

However, the €65 million Phase 2 contract alone exceeds that original objective, indicating a larger overall investment in the mission.

    Launch Scheduled for 2029

MAGPIE is expected to launch in 2029 aboard ispace’s Mission 4 lunar lander.

Alongside ESA’s funding, ispace is also set to receive up to ¥20 billion (approximately €107 million) over five years through Japan’s Space Strategy Fund, supporting the development and execution of the lunar mission.
