Nearly two decades after its original release, Need for Speed: Underground 2 has been brought back to life by a fan remake using Unreal Engine 5. The project offers updated visuals and gameplay improvements that aim to modernize the 2004 racing classic for today’s hardware.
Developed by an independent creator known as Apfelbaum, the remake is available as a free demo on the RPGGameplay Discord server. The project enhances the original title with realistic lighting, weather effects, and higher-quality reflections. “You can already explore various environments while carefully observing the changes that have been made, like the graphic rendering, the lights that are more natural, or even the reflections,” the original article stated.
The demo also introduces new customization options, including updated paint designs for vehicles and dynamic weather events such as thunderstorms. Despite being in early development, players can already explore parts of Bayview, the open-world setting from the original game.
Apfelbaum said the full version is planned to include the entire career mode and a complete open-world experience, though features such as AI traffic and rival racers are not yet available.
While Electronic Arts, the publisher of the Need for Speed series, has not commented on the fan project, it has drawn attention from nostalgic players who remember the title as one of the PlayStation 2’s defining racing games.
