France will raise subsidies for electric vehicles (EVs) from October 1 by adding an extra €1,000 bonus for cars assembled in Europe and equipped with European-made batteries, the government said.
The additional support comes on top of the country’s existing environmental bonus, known as the Bonus Écologique. “With the new bonus, the maximum support rises to €5,200 for qualifying vehicles,” according to the announcement.
Currently, French buyers can receive between €3,100 and €4,200 depending on household income and the vehicle’s environmental score, which factors in CO₂ emissions from production and battery manufacturing. The higher support level follows a slowdown in EV demand, with registrations falling 4.3% between January and July 2025.
While the subsidy aims to make EVs more affordable and boost local manufacturing, relatively few models use European-made batteries today. France is building new battery plants, particularly in the north, while Germany and Hungary are also expanding production. A monthly list of eligible models will be published by ADEME, the national environment and energy agency.
Alongside the subsidy, the government will revive its EV leasing program for low-income households. Backed by €370 million in funding, the scheme is expected to put at least 50,000 vehicles on the road. Applications will open on September 30.
