Garmin Releases Fix for Smartwatch Boot Failure, Some Users Face Data Loss

Garmin has introduced new troubleshooting steps for smartwatch users affected by the “blue triangle of death” boot-up error, saying it has resolved the underlying issue that prevented some devices from starting. However, certain models will require a full reset, resulting in data loss.

“We have resolved the underlying issue causing some devices to be stuck on the startup screen or a blue triangle,” Garmin spokesperson Natalie Miller told The Verge. The Garmin Support Center now displays an updated notice confirming the fix and directs users still experiencing problems to support.garmin.com for step-by-step solutions.

Garmin has not disclosed the cause of the issue, though users on the r/Garmin subreddit have speculated it may be linked to GPS-related activities.

Garmin initially recommended a basic reset—holding the power button until the device turns off—but has since expanded its guidance. Watches that restart successfully should be synced with the Garmin Connect app or Garmin Express software to prevent future occurrences.

For devices that remain stuck on the boot screen, Garmin advises different solutions based on the model. Owners of Epix, Fenix, Instinct, Descent, and Enduro watches can attempt a restart while connected to a PC or Mac running Garmin Express, which should trigger a sync and restore normal function.

Users of Forerunner, Vivoactive, Venu, and Approach golf watches must perform a full factory reset using a series of button presses. However, Garmin warns this process will erase stored data, including Garmin Wallet, downloaded watch faces and apps, body battery metrics, and customized data fields.

Garmin Edge cycling computers are also affected. The company recommends connecting the device to a Windows computer and manually deleting the CPE.bin file. If the issue persists, a master reset will be required, necessitating re-pairing with a smartphone.
