Google has unveiled Gemini CLI Extensions, a new feature allowing outside developers and companies to integrate their tools directly with the company’s command-line AI system. The announcement marks a significant expansion of Gemini CLI, with early partners including Figma, Stripe, and others contributing to the open ecosystem.
The launch comes shortly after OpenAI introduced third-party app integration for ChatGPT. Unlike OpenAI’s curated approach, Google’s framework lets developers publish extensions independently on GitHub, where they can be installed manually. This model reflects Google’s strategy to foster openness and collaboration within the developer community.
Taylor Mullen, a senior staff engineer at Google, said in the company’s announcement that an open ecosystem is central to Gemini CLI’s development, emphasizing inclusivity and transparency for contributors.
The first available extension connects Gemini CLI to Google’s Nanobanana image generator, enabling users to create visuals directly from the terminal. Google described the integration as a step toward making AI-assisted workflows more seamless for developers who prefer code-based environments.
Since its introduction in June, Gemini CLI has attracted over one million users, primarily software engineers. Google’s senior director of product management for developer tools, Ryan J. Salva, said the latest update is designed to transform Gemini CLI into an extensibility platform that bridges AI capabilities with other tools across modern development pipelines.
