Google has expanded its AI assistant ecosystem by bringing Gemini Spark to macOS, enabling users to perform desktop-based tasks while introducing new integrations, real-time monitoring capabilities and broader automation features.
The launch extends Spark beyond web and mobile experiences, positioning Google’s AI agent to compete more directly with desktop AI assistants designed to interact with local files, applications and productivity workflows.
Desktop AI Comes to macOS
Gemini Spark is now available through the existing Gemini desktop application for Mac, allowing users to access AI-powered assistance directly from their computers.
The desktop version can organize files, analyze local documents and use information stored on a Mac to generate Google Workspace content such as documents and spreadsheets.
Google says users can, for example, convert invoices stored on their computer into budgeting spreadsheets, streamlining routine administrative tasks without manually transferring data.
Initially, the macOS beta is available only to Google AI Ultra subscribers in the United States.
More Connected Productivity Tools
Google has expanded Spark’s ecosystem by integrating support for Google Tasks and Google Keep, addressing one of the most requested productivity features following the platform’s initial launch.
The AI agent can now interact with short notes, reminders and task lists alongside larger Workspace documents.
Support has also been extended to several third-party platforms, including Canva, Dropbox, Instacart, OpenTable and Zillow Rentals.
These integrations allow Spark to perform actions such as creating marketing materials, managing cloud files, ordering groceries, reserving restaurant tables and scheduling apartment tours through connected services.
Real-Time Monitoring and Automation
Google has also introduced real-time topic tracking, enabling Spark to monitor continuously changing information rather than relying solely on user prompts.
The feature allows the assistant to follow live events such as sports results, financial market activity and breaking news while also tracking updates across blogs, social media, online shopping platforms and weather services.
By maintaining awareness of changing information, Spark is designed to deliver more timely responses and automate workflows that depend on continuously updated data.
Cross-Device AI Workflows Coming Soon
Google says future updates will enable users to assign multi-step tasks across devices.
One example involves initiating a request from a smartphone that instructs the desktop version of Spark to retrieve information from files stored on a Mac and complete additional processing automatically.
The company has not announced a release date for this capability but said the feature will arrive in an upcoming update.
Support for Custom AI Integrations
Another addition is support for the Model Context Protocol (MCP), an emerging standard that enables AI assistants to connect securely with external applications and services.
Custom MCP support will allow users to integrate their own software tools into Spark, creating more specialized assistants tailored to individual workflows and enterprise environments.
The expanded feature set reflects Google’s broader strategy of evolving Gemini Spark from a conversational assistant into a desktop productivity platform capable of managing files, coordinating applications and automating increasingly complex digital tasks across devices.
