Google announced a major update to its Chrome browser, introducing new Gemini-powered features designed to help users multitask, automate complex workflows and work more closely across Google’s apps on macOS, Windows and Chromebook Plus devices.

The update is built on Gemini 3, Google’s latest artificial intelligence model, and introduces a persistent side panel that allows users to interact with an AI assistant without leaving their active tab. Google said the feature is intended to reduce the need to switch between multiple tabs, enabling tasks such as comparing products, summarising reviews or checking schedules alongside ongoing work.

“We’re integrating powerful new AI features in Chrome that help you multitask across the web with a new side panel experience,” Google said in its announcement, adding that the goal is to make browsing “easier than ever before.”

The company is also embedding image-editing capabilities through a tool it calls Nano Banana, which allows users to transform images directly within the browser using text prompts. Google said the feature can be used for tasks ranging from visual inspiration for home design to turning research data into infographics, without downloading or re-uploading files.

Deeper links with Google services such as Gmail, Calendar, Maps, YouTube and Google Flights are another focus of the update. Through these “Connected Apps,” Gemini in Chrome can pull information from emails, suggest travel options and draft messages using contextual data, according to Google. Users can manage these integrations through Gemini’s settings.

In the coming months, Google plans to bring its “Personal Intelligence” feature to Chrome, allowing the browser to remember context from previous interactions and provide more tailored responses, while giving users control over what data is connected. For paid subscribers in the United States, Google is also introducing an expanded “auto browse” feature that can carry out multi-step tasks such as travel planning, form filling or subscription management, with safeguards requiring confirmation for sensitive actions like purchases.
