A new wearable device called Hydrosense is being marketed as a tool for athletes to better understand their hydration needs by directly measuring sweat. The product, launched through a crowdfunding campaign, is currently available at an early bird price of $149 for a pack of ten single-use sensors.
Unlike conventional wearables that estimate hydration indirectly through effort or environmental factors, Hydrosense uses colorimetric technology to analyse sweat composition. The disposable sensors provide up to four hours of data, offering users real-time insights into fluid and electrolyte loss.
“According to its manufacturer, the device uses colorimetric technology to directly analyse sweat, allowing users to monitor their fluid and electrolyte loss in real time,” the company said in its campaign materials.
The companion mobile app displays hydration status and generates personalized recommendations on fluid intake. Developers say the product is designed to help athletes optimize performance by knowing exactly when to drink water or replenish electrolytes.
Still, the relatively high cost may limit adoption. Industry analysts note that athletes could opt to use Hydrosense occasionally to establish a personal baseline for fluid loss during different types of exercise, rather than before every workout. For comparison, weighing before and after training remains a common, low-cost method to gauge hydration needs.
