Electric vehicle manufacturer Nikola marked a significant achievement in 2023, producing 42 and wholesaling 35 Class 8 hydrogen fuel cell electric vehicles (FCEVs). The company’s CEO, Steve Girsky, commended the dedication of the team, emphasizing the uniqueness of their U.S.-designed and assembled Class 8 hydrogen fuel cell electric truck.

Girsky expressed gratitude to employees, customers, and partners for the accomplishment and anticipates a continued success with more trucks expected to be delivered in 2024.

Out of the seven trucks produced but not wholesaled, three are undergoing an extended field test with a fleet partner, two are in ongoing validation and engineering processes, and two are designated for service training and customer demonstrations.

Nikola’s FCEV boasts a range of up to 500 miles and an estimated fueling time as low as 20 minutes, positioning it as one of the longest-range commercially available zero tailpipe emission Class 8 trucks. The versatile applications of the FCEV include drayage, intermodal, metro-regional truckload, less-than-truckload, and certain specialized hauling use cases.

Girsky outlined the company’s goal to introduce a cleaner and more efficient way to deliver goods to the North American market. Nikola’s FCEV customer pilot programs have reportedly shown strong results, with truck uptime reaching an impressive 98%, a crucial factor for efficient fleet usage.

Assembled in Coolidge, Arizona, the FCEV commenced serial production on July 31, 2023, and saw its commercial launch on September 28, marking a pivotal moment for Nikola in the electric vehicle market.
