Nintendo has unveiled a significant update for Animal Crossing: New Horizons, marking the game’s first major expansion in over five years. Scheduled for release on January 15, 2026, Version 3.0 introduces extensive new content and optimizations for the upcoming Nintendo Switch 2, while remaining compatible with the original console.
According to Nintendo, the update comes in two parts: a free patch for all players and a paid “Nintendo Switch 2 Edition” that enhances graphics and gameplay performance. The new version will allow Animal Crossing: New Horizons to run in 4K resolution when connected to a TV, while multiplayer sessions will expand from eight to twelve participants. The company said in its announcement, “We wanted to make Animal Crossing: New Horizons feel fresh again and take full advantage of the new system’s capabilities.” The upgraded edition will cost $4.99 for existing players or $64.99 for new buyers on the Nintendo eShop.
Beyond technical improvements, the update introduces several new in-game features. Players will be able to design and manage a hotel, furnishing rooms with themed décor such as “beach” or “forest.” Guests who are satisfied with their stay will reward players with hotel tickets, which can be exchanged for exclusive items. Additionally, the character Resetti returns with a new role, assisting players in organizing and cleaning up their islands.
Version 3.0 also adds a dream world feature—an alternate island that can be customized independently, including its weather, time of day, and inhabitants. Nintendo said the dream island “allows players to explore their creativity without affecting their main island.” The update will also bring new collectible items, including retro Nintendo consoles that can play select classic games for users with a Nintendo Switch Online subscription.
The Version 3.0 update and Switch 2 Edition reflect Nintendo’s strategy to extend the life of one of its best-selling titles while showcasing the capabilities of its next-generation hardware. With the combination of visual upgrades and expanded gameplay, the update aims to re-engage both long-time fans and new players when it arrives early next year.
