OpenAI said it has begun accepting submissions from developers seeking to publish third-party apps directly inside ChatGPT, expanding the chatbot’s capabilities beyond conversation to include real-world actions such as shopping, content creation and information lookup.
The company said the new apps can be triggered within conversations when selected from the tools menu or referenced by name, allowing users to move seamlessly from dialogue to task completion. OpenAI described the initiative as part of a broader effort to turn ChatGPT into an action-oriented platform, stating, “This is just the beginning,” as it looks to build a wider ecosystem around in-chat apps.

As part of the rollout, OpenAI has introduced an app directory embedded within ChatGPT, where users can browse featured apps or search for specific ones. Developers will be able to link directly to their app pages using deep links from other platforms, while approved apps will be released gradually starting in the new year.
To support developers, OpenAI said it is providing an Apps SDK in beta, along with best-practice documentation, open-source examples and a chat-native user interface library. In the initial phase, developers may direct users outside ChatGPT to complete transactions, while OpenAI evaluates additional monetization options such as digital goods.

OpenAI said all apps must comply with its safety, privacy and transparency requirements, including clear disclosure of data use. Users will be informed about what information may be shared when connecting an app and will retain the ability to disconnect at any time, as OpenAI continues to refine the platform based on developer and user feedback.
