BBVA and OpenAI have deepened their partnership with a multi-year AI transformation initiative that will extend ChatGPT Enterprise to all 120,000 of the bank’s employees worldwide, the companies said on Thursday. The rollout marks a tenfold increase from BBVA’s current deployment and is aimed at accelerating the bank’s use of generative AI across its global operations.
The expansion is designed to enhance customer interactions, support frontline bankers, modernise risk analysis and reshape internal processes such as software development. “Our alliance with OpenAI accelerates the native integration of artificial intelligence across the bank to create a smarter, more proactive, and completely personalized banking experience,” BBVA Chairman Carlos Torres Vila said. The bank described the partnership as a key step in its transition toward becoming an AI-native institution.

BBVA first partnered with OpenAI in 2024, initially providing 3,300 ChatGPT accounts to employees before expanding that number to 11,000. According to the company, staff created thousands of custom GPTs and “saved nearly three hours per week on routine tasks,” with more than 80% engaging with the tools daily. The new programme extends the technology’s reach to 25 countries, making it one of the largest enterprise deployments of generative AI in the financial sector.
OpenAI said the expansion will include access to its latest models, enterprise-grade security controls and tools for developing internal AI agents connected to BBVA systems. “BBVA is a strong example of how a large financial institution can adopt AI with real ambition and speed,” OpenAI CEO Sam Altman said, adding that the integration will help enhance the bank’s overall customer experience.

Beyond internal efficiency gains, BBVA is using AI to reshape its consumer-facing services. The bank has already deployed an OpenAI-powered virtual assistant, Blue, which helps customers manage accounts using natural language. As part of the new agreement, BBVA and OpenAI will establish joint teams focused on developing training, governance and new customer interaction models, including exploring ways for clients to access banking services directly through ChatGPT.
