Renault has begun deploying Google’s Gemini artificial intelligence assistant to vehicles equipped with its openR link multimedia system, introducing enhanced voice interaction capabilities through an over-the-air software update.
The rollout began on June 15, 2026, and is being introduced gradually across Renault’s European lineup and selected international markets. For compatible vehicles, Gemini replaces Google Assistant as an optional upgrade at no additional cost.
More Natural Voice Interaction
According to Renault, Gemini enables more conversational interactions by understanding contextual and multi-step requests without requiring drivers to use specific predefined voice commands.
The AI assistant can operate a range of vehicle functions, including climate controls, navigation, radio settings and vehicle preferences. It also provides real-time electric vehicle range information to help drivers plan journeys more efficiently.
Unlike Android Auto, which depends on a connected smartphone for many features, Gemini operates directly through the vehicle’s built-in infotainment system, allowing access to vehicle-specific controls and information.
Existing Vehicles to Receive the Update
The software upgrade is also being delivered to compatible Renault vehicles already on the road.
Renault introduced the openR link multimedia platform in 2022 with the launch of the Mégane E-Tech Electric. The company is now extending Gemini support across eligible models using over-the-air software updates, eliminating the need for dealership visits.
Additional Features Planned
Renault said future software updates will introduce Gemini Live, a feature designed to make conversations with the AI assistant even more natural.
The upcoming capability will allow drivers to interrupt responses, make multiple requests during a single conversation without repeating the wake phrase and seamlessly switch between languages while interacting with the assistant.
Support for 13 Languages
At launch, Gemini supports 13 languages:
- English
- French
- German
- Swedish
- Dutch
- Italian
- Spanish
- Japanese
- Polish
- Portuguese
- Danish
- Norwegian
- Turkish
Renault said additional language support will be introduced through future over-the-air software updates as the platform continues to evolve.
