Rivian has filed a patent for wheel covers with active aerodynamic elements designed to improve the efficiency of its electric vehicles, according to a disclosure by the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO).

The patent, submitted in August 2023 and published on March 6, describes wheel covers with movable openings that can align with wheel spokes in one position and create a smooth surface in another.

A spring mechanism allows the covers to rotate between positions, adjusting based on driving conditions.

“Active wheel covers could help evacuate built-up air pressure from the wheel wells—further improving aerodynamic performance,” Rivian noted in its filing.

The company also stated that the covers, when open, could assist with cooling, similar to the active grille shutters used in many modern vehicles.

Electric SUVs and pickup trucks often face aerodynamic challenges due to their larger, boxy shapes. Other automakers have explored similar solutions, including Stellantis, which patented a deployable rear step with an integrated diffuser for pickups.

Hyundai has also tested an active air skirt, which reduced drag by 2.8% in trials using a Genesis GV60, though the company has not announced production plans.
