Dan Houser, co-founder of Rockstar Games, identified Red Dead Redemption 2 as the most significant project of his career during an appearance at Los Angeles Comic Con. He described the 2018 title as the studio’s most complete effort in open-world storytelling, with a blend of narrative depth, thematic consistency and emotional resonance.
Houser also pointed to Grand Theft Auto IV as a breakthrough in narrative design for the long-running franchise, noting how it marked a shift in how Rockstar approached storytelling. He added that sections of Grand Theft Auto V were particularly effective in showcasing the game’s three-character system, which became a defining element of the release.
His reflections underscored the lasting impact of Rockstar’s biggest franchises, with Red Dead Redemption II and the Grand Theft Auto series both recognized for their influence on players and the wider gaming industry. These titles are often credited with setting new standards for narrative-driven open-world experiences.
Houser, who departed Rockstar in 2020, is not involved in the upcoming Grand Theft Auto VI. Expectations for the new release remain high, with fans looking for it to build on the narrative foundations established in the studio’s earlier games.
