Russia’s new humanoid robot, AIdol, collapsed during its first public demonstration in Moscow, prompting developers to halt further showcases while they review the machine’s systems. The incident occurred during an event organised by Idol, a Moscow-based robotics startup, which had positioned the machine as a step forward for the country’s efforts in advanced automation.
A video of the demonstration showed the robot attempting to wave before losing its balance and falling to the floor, an episode some viewers described as “embarrassing.” One line from the original report noted that the machine “crashed to the ground before its handlers rushed to cover it up,” a moment that quickly drew online attention. The robot was later brought back on stage and remained upright for the rest of the event.
The AIdol project aims to showcase capabilities that match current leading humanoid platforms, including walking, object manipulation and person-to-person interaction. But Russian robotics firms face persistent challenges, including sanctions that limit access to components and continued losses in engineering talent since 2022.

Developers said the fall resulted from calibration and lighting issues rather than structural deficiencies. They have paused public demonstrations while they refine the robot’s balance mechanisms, describing the setback as part of the early-stage development process.
