Sharp Japan said it will launch a Green Funding campaign in November 2025 for its new Xrostella VR1 virtual reality glasses, a lightweight headset designed for use with both PCs and smartphones. The company said the upcoming device aims to offer a more compact and comfortable VR experience compared with conventional models.

At 198 grams, the Xrostella VR1 is less than half the weight of Meta’s Quest 3s, Sony’s PlayStation VR2, and Apple’s Vision Pro, measuring 160.7 x 70.6 x 106 mm. “The VR1 features a glasses-like design with pancake lenses, making it easier to wear and remove than competing goggle-like headsets,” Sharp said in a statement.

Each eye is equipped with a 2,160 x 2,160 LCD display running at 90 Hz, providing a 90° field of view. The device allows users to adjust the interpupillary distance between 58 and 71 mm and offers diopter correction from 0D to -9.0D, making it suitable for nearsighted users without requiring additional lenses.

The headset incorporates two six-degrees-of-freedom (6DoF) tracking cameras and a color camera to detect head movement, accurately map virtual environments, and deliver a real-world passthrough view. Two wireless hand controllers are included for motion tracking and input, and built-in speakers and microphones support in-app communication and virtual meetings.

Sharp said the Xrostella VR1 will initially be available through its Green Funding campaign in Japan, with plans to gauge market interest before wider release. The launch marks Sharp’s entry into the growing lightweight VR headset market, which is increasingly focused on portability, comfort, and cross-platform compatibility.
