Snap Inc is rolling out new storage plans for its Memories feature, a move that introduces paid options for users who save more than 5GB of content. The announcement marks a shift for the platform’s photo and video archiving tool, which has grown significantly since its launch in 2016.
According to the company, Snapchatters have saved more than one trillion Memories to date. The feature allows users to selectively preserve Snaps, distinguishing it from camera rolls that may be filled with duplicates and screenshots.
For most users — who store less than 5GB of content — nothing will change. However, those with larger collections will now be able to upgrade to new subscription tiers. The plans include 100GB, 250GB with Snapchat+, and 5TB under Snapchat Platinum.
The company said it will provide a 12-month grace period for excess storage, giving users the option to upgrade or download Memories directly to their devices before limits take effect.
“It’s never easy to transition from receiving a service for free to paying for it, but we hope the value we provide with Memories is worth the cost,” the company said in a statement.
Snap Inc said the changes are intended to ensure long-term support and investment in the feature. The rollout of paid tiers reflects a broader industry trend of platforms monetizing popular services as user demand scales.
