SoftBank Group Corp. has agreed to purchase ABB Ltd’s robotics division for $5.375 billion, marking a major step in its effort to expand its artificial intelligence and automation portfolio. The Japanese conglomerate said the transaction has been approved by its board and is expected to close in mid-to-late 2026, pending regulatory clearance in the European Union, China, and the United States.

The acquisition aligns with SoftBank’s long-term strategy to accelerate the integration of AI technologies across its core focus areas. The company outlined its ambitions to build on its initiatives in AI chips, robotics, data centers, and energy, positioning the deal as a foundation for future innovation in what it calls the era of artificial super intelligence.

ABB’s robotics arm, based in Zurich, is one of the world’s largest automation suppliers, employing around 7,000 staff and generating about $2.3 billion in revenue in 2024. Its technology portfolio includes robotic systems for manufacturing, logistics, and industrial processes. The division’s established customer base and global network are expected to complement SoftBank’s growing ecosystem of AI-related ventures.

SoftBank plans to integrate ABB’s robotics capabilities with its existing holdings, including SoftBank Robotics Group, Berkshire Grey, AutoStore, Agile Robots, and Skild AI. The company believes this consolidation will accelerate the development of next-generation robotics powered by AI, reinforcing its position in the evolving automation market.

Both companies expressed confidence that the partnership would combine industrial expertise and advanced AI to support continued growth in automation. SoftBank said it views the acquisition as a pivotal move in its goal to link robotics with AI innovation and advance its broader mission of technology-driven progress.
