Square Enix’s upcoming Dragon Quest I & II HD-2D Remake will feature new content designed to strengthen the narrative connections between the series’ earliest entries. The company said the additions aim to “further flesh out the story of the original Dragon Quest game and better connect the first two entries to the third Dragon Quest game.”

The remake, set for release on October 30, will expand on the original 1980s titles with new quests, characters, and dungeons. Among the new additions is Rubiss, the creator goddess who plays a central role in Dragon Quest II and Dragon Quest III but was absent from the first game. In the new version, players will undertake a quest to seek Rubiss and the faeries for assistance.

The remake will also introduce several previously unseen characters, including a sage specialized in curing diseases and a group of dwarves, along with new events such as monster invasions in towns.

Originally released as Dragon Warrior in North America, the first Dragon Quest titles were relatively simple in structure and narrative. Square Enix said the updated edition will provide a more cohesive and immersive experience while maintaining the classic role-playing gameplay that defined the series.

Dragon Quest I & II HD-2D Remake will be available on Nintendo Switch, Switch 2, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC via Steam and the Microsoft Store.
