Square Enix said it will release a new Dragon Quest mobile game titled Dragon Quest Smash/Grow in 2026, marking a departure from the traditional role-playing format in favor of roguelite gameplay.
The company described the upcoming title as a mobile-exclusive RPG designed for short play sessions. “Unlike traditional entries in the classic JRPG series, the game is described by its developers as a roguelite RPG featuring fast, action-packed combat,” Square Enix said.
Gameplay will center on battling waves of monsters, collecting skills, and unleashing “Coup de Grâce” attacks. Each round will feature randomized power-ups to keep runs varied. The art style remains consistent with the long-running franchise, while mechanics distinguish it from mainline titles.
A closed beta test will be held from Oct. 14 to Oct. 21, with registration open until Oct. 2. Square Enix said player feedback from the test will be used to optimize the experience before launch.
The free-to-play title will include optional in-game purchases. Its debut comes as the publisher continues to expand the series, following remakes such as Dragon Quest I-III 2D-HD and Dragon Quest VII Reimagined.
