Chinese battery manufacturer Svolt has unveiled a new high-capacity battery pack aimed at plug-in hybrid vehicles, seeking to extend electric-only driving ranges to levels comparable with some fully electric cars.

At its sixth Battery Day event in Changzhou, Svolt presented the Fortress 2.0 battery pack, which offers a capacity of 80 kilowatt-hours and is designed for larger family vehicles. The company said hybrids using the pack could achieve an electric range of more than 249 miles, a significant increase compared with most plug-in hybrid models currently on the market.

The new battery cells use graphite-based technology to support ultra-fast charging. According to Svolt, the pack can operate at a 6C charging rate, allowing it to charge from 10% to 80% in about 10 minutes. Mass production of the Fortress 2.0 battery is scheduled to begin in March 2026.

Svolt also introduced an updated version of its Ion Oscillation Pulse Charging technology, which is intended to reduce charging times by around 25% without raising costs. The company plans to begin deploying the technology in electric vehicles in the third quarter of 2026.

In addition, Svolt reported progress in semi-solid-state battery development, with a first-generation cell offering an energy density of 270 watt-hours per kilogram already in limited production. The battery maker has confirmed work on customized energy solutions for European brands, including BMW-owned Mini. For the mass market, Svolt plans to start production of a lower-cost mid-nickel battery variant in October 2026, as it aims to build on its first quarterly profit in late 2025 and reach full-year profitability in 2026.
