In a move addressing safety concerns, Tesla has undertaken an effective recall of 1.62 million vehicles in China, encompassing its popular models S, X, 3, and Y, according to a statement from the China State Administration for Market Regulation on Friday. This recall in Tesla’s second-largest market closely follows two recalls conducted by the automaker in the United States in December.
The China State Administration for Market Regulation clarified that Tesla has the capability to remotely upgrade the affected vehicles to address the identified issues. This action is officially categorized as a product recall under Chinese regulations. Tesla plans to release an over-the-air software update for 1.61 million units, consisting of both imported Models S and X and the domestically produced Models 3 and Y cars manufactured from 2014 to 2023.
The primary focus of the software update is to prevent the misuse of the Autosteer function and reduce the risk of collisions, according to the regulatory body. Additionally, Tesla will conduct a separate software upgrade for 7,538 units of Models S and X cars to address concerns related to doors potentially unlocking during crashes.
In the United States, Tesla had previously initiated recalls for over 2 million vehicles to implement new safeguards in its Autopilot advanced driver-assistance system, responding to safety concerns raised by federal regulators. Furthermore, the automaker recalled slightly over 120,000 Model S and Model X vehicles in the United States, specifically addressing the risk of doors being unlocked and opening in the event of a crash.
