Tesla will end its promotion allowing customers to transfer its Full Self-Driving (FSD) software between vehicles for free, shifting access to the driver assistance system toward a subscription-only model.
The free transfer option will no longer be available after Feb. 14, according to Chief Executive Elon Musk, who said the offer “will be impossible after February 14.” The promotion had been repeatedly extended and was widely used by owners upgrading to new Tesla vehicles, including the Model Y.
From Feb. 15, Tesla plans to stop selling FSD as a one-time purchase, currently priced at $8,000, leaving subscriptions as the only way for owners without the software to access it. The existing FSD subscription costs $99 per month, a model that provides recurring revenue compared with the previous upfront payment option.
The change comes as Tesla prepares to release an unsupervised version of FSD through over-the-air updates, a step that would allow compatible vehicles to join the company’s planned robotaxi ride-sharing platform. Owners who participate would pay a subscription fee and share about 20% of their ride revenue with Tesla for platform and payment services.

Tesla has not confirmed whether it will introduce multiple subscription tiers, but pricing could vary by vehicle hardware and software capability, with older models potentially offered limited versions and newer vehicles gaining access to full unsupervised features.
