TidalSense has raised €16.6 million in new funding to accelerate the commercialization of its artificial intelligence-powered respiratory diagnostic technology in the United Kingdom and support expansion into international markets, including the United States.
Funding to Support Commercial Expansion
The Cambridge-based health technology company said the financing round included participation from new investor Cross-Border Impact Ventures, alongside existing investors BGF, Airstream Capital, and Foresight Group.
The latest investment brings TidalSense’s total funding to €35.1 million, including €9.6 million in grant funding from Innovate UK, SBRI, NIHR, and Asthma + Lung UK.
In 2023, the company completed an €8.6 million funding round led by BGF and Downing.
Founded in 2013, TidalSense develops AI-driven diagnostic and monitoring technologies for respiratory diseases based on its proprietary N-Tidal sensor platform.
AI Alternative to Spirometry
The company said chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) remains one of the leading causes of death in the United Kingdom, with approximately 30,000 deaths annually.
According to TidalSense, COPD costs the National Health Service around €2.2 billion each year, while more than half of NHS regions lack sufficient capacity to meet demand for conventional spirometry testing.
The company estimates that about 600,000 people in the UK are currently waiting for a formal COPD diagnosis.
TidalSense said its N-Tidal Diagnose system offers an alternative approach by requiring patients to breathe normally into a handheld device for 75 seconds rather than performing forceful breathing maneuvers required by spirometry.
The device captures carbon dioxide waveforms, or capnograms, which are analyzed using AI models trained on more than 2.5 million patient breaths to detect COPD.
The company said healthcare professionals can be trained to operate the device in approximately 10 minutes, without requiring specialist respiratory qualifications.
Clinical Validation and NHS Deployment
TidalSense reported that post-market validation results presented at the 2025 European Respiratory Society Congress showed N-Tidal Diagnose achieved more than 90% performance across key diagnostic accuracy measures when evaluated on previously unseen patient data.
In March 2025, N-Tidal Diagnose became the first non-spirometry AI diagnostic device to receive CE marking under the European Union Medical Device Regulation (Class IIa) for COPD diagnosis.
The technology entered the NHS in September 2025 and has since been adopted by Suffolk and North-East Essex Integrated Care Board, expanded into NHS Wales, community lung screening programs in southern England, and healthcare services in Glasgow.
Addressing Gaps in Respiratory Care
Chief Executive Officer Dr. Ameera Patel said respiratory disease has historically received less attention than other major health conditions despite affecting a significant proportion of the population.
“Respiratory disease has been neglected by governments and health systems for years, often overshadowed by cancer and cardiovascular disease, even though it affects one in five people.”
She said the company aims to improve access to COPD diagnosis by replacing older diagnostic approaches with faster, more accessible technology.
“We’re still diagnosing in the 21st century with a test invented in the 1800s, and one that needs specialist equipment and training most of the world doesn’t have access to. Lower income and minority communities pay the price for that first. That’s the gap we want to close at TidalSense, and the NHS is the first place we’re doing it.”
Preparing for U.S. Expansion
As part of its international growth strategy, TidalSense has strengthened its leadership team with several senior appointments.
The company added Andrew Wheeler, formerly of NICE, as Director of Market Access and Public Policy, appointed Eric Mayes, founding Chief Executive Officer of Endomagnetics, as a Non-Executive Director, and welcomed Donna Parr of Cross-Border Impact Ventures to its board.
Parr said the company’s clinical evidence and real-world deployment were key factors behind the investment.

She added that the technology has the potential to improve access to COPD diagnosis globally, particularly among underserved populations.
