Apple Ends Support for Video Editing App Clips After Seven Years

Apple has officially ended support for its video editing app Clips, removing it from the App Store and confirming it will no longer receive updates. The decision marks the end of a seven-year run for the app, which launched in 2017 as a lightweight tool for creating short, shareable videos.

According to Apple’s support page, Clips is no longer available for new users to download as of October 10, though existing users can continue to access and re-download it through their Apple accounts. “Existing users can continue to use the app on current or earlier versions of iOS and iPadOS,” the company stated.

Apple advised users to save their Clips projects to their photo library, warning that the app may become less functional over time without updates. The company recommended exporting videos — with or without filters and effects — so they can be edited using other apps in the future.

Initially introduced as Apple’s answer to Snapchat and Instagram Stories, Clips allowed users to combine short videos and photos with filters, emojis, and background music. While early updates added new effects and improved editing tools, recent years saw fewer improvements beyond routine bug fixes.

Reactions from Apple users have been muted, with many saying they had not used the app in years. The discontinuation comes as Apple appears to be prioritizing broader creative software and emerging AI-driven tools in its ecosystem.
