The director of Square Enix’s Final Fantasy 7 remake trilogy said Nintendo’s upcoming Switch 2 offers capable hardware but continues to pose technical challenges for developers, even as work on a Switch 2 version of Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth approaches completion.
Naoki Hamaguchi made the comments in a recent interview with Polygon, noting that while the console represents a step forward for Nintendo in terms of performance, its specifications remain restrictive for large, visually demanding games. As a result, studios are required to invest significant effort in optimisation.
Naoki Hamaguchi says the Switch 2 specs are not as high as other consoles but they still aim to show the quality of the FF7 Remake trilogy to Nintendo players!

Hamaguchi said the Switch 2’s relatively modest hardware made porting Final Fantasy 7 Remake Intergrade a demanding process and that other publishers are encountering similar issues. Constraints such as memory limits and cartridge capacity can affect image quality and overall performance, even when supported by upscaling technologies.
The technical challenge is expected to be greater for Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth, which expands beyond the urban environment of Midgar into larger, open-world areas that require more detailed assets and higher system resources. Developers may need to make compromises to maintain stable performance on the platform.

Despite these difficulties, Hamaguchi said the Switch 2 version of Rebirth is in its final stages of development, with only finishing adjustments remaining. The update comes as expectations grow for a broader lineup of third-party Switch 2 titles, potentially highlighted in an upcoming Nintendo Direct Partner presentation.
