Apple has restored the compact tab layout option in Safari with the latest beta releases of macOS 26.4 and iPadOS 26.4, reversing a change that drew criticism from some users last year.

The compact tab design was originally introduced with macOS Monterey in 2021. It allowed tabs to be integrated into the main browser toolbar rather than displayed in a separate row, freeing up additional screen space. Apple removed the option with the release of macOS Tahoe in 2025, prompting dissatisfaction among users who preferred the streamlined interface.

With the release of the macOS 26.4 beta, the compact layout option has reappeared in Safari settings. The same feature has also been reinstated in the iPadOS 26.4 beta, indicating that Apple has responded to user feedback following its earlier removal.

Apple has not publicly explained why the feature was discontinued. The updated operating systems remain in beta testing, and stable public versions are expected later this month or in early March.

The timing of the software updates aligns with Apple’s planned March 4 event, where the company is widely expected to introduce new hardware products, including refreshed MacBook Pro models and updated iPads.
